Rainy Myrtle Beach Photo Shoot | Myrtle Beach Family Photographer
One of the most common questions I get as a Myrtle Beach family photographer is, “What do we do if it rains?”
Beach weather can change quickly along the coast, especially during the summer months. Because of that, I always keep one evening open each week as a rain make up day. This gives my families peace of mind when planning their Myrtle Beach family photos, knowing we have a backup plan if the weather doesn’t cooperate.
But the truth is, many beach sessions never actually need that extra day. Sometimes all it takes is a little flexibility. If there is rain in the forecast, we can often adjust the timing of the session and start a little earlier. Many times the weather window is still perfect for photos before the rain arrives. That’s exactly what we did for this wonderful family during their Myrtle Beach beach family session. We simply started their session a bit earlier in the evening and ended up with beautiful skies, soft light, and a quiet beach.
Another thing many families don’t realize is that a little coastal weather can actually make photos even more beautiful. A soft ocean breeze, a little wind in your hair, and those dramatic beach skies often create some of the most memorable images. Unless there is heavy rain or lightning, we can often continue the session and simply embrace the natural beach elements.
If you’re curious about how weather is handled for beach sessions, I share more details on my FAQ page about rain, wind, and rescheduling.
Sessions like this are one of the reasons I love photographing families at Myrtle Beach State Park and the surrounding beaches. The light is beautiful, the ocean breeze keeps things comfortable, and families can relax and enjoy time together while we capture real moments.
We finished their sunset family session just before the rain rolled in, and the result was a gallery full of natural moments and memories from their time at the beach. Beach weather can be unpredictable, but with a little flexibility it almost always works out perfectly for your Myrtle Beach family photos.
Myrtle Beach Photographer | Extended Family Sunset Session at Myrtle Beach State Park
There’s something extra special about extended family sessions at Myrtle Beach State Park — especially at sunset. As a Myrtle Beach photographer, I photograph many beach sessions each year, but large family gatherings at golden hour always feel a little magical.
When families vacation together along the South Carolina coast, it’s often the only time everyone is in the same place at once. Grandparents, siblings, cousins — all together, barefoot in the sand, with the sun setting behind them. That’s what makes extended family sessions so meaningful.
Why Myrtle Beach State Park Is Perfect for Extended Family Sessions
Myrtle Beach State Park offers a quieter, more natural backdrop compared to some of the busier areas along the Grand Strand. The sea oats, dunes, and wide open shoreline create the perfect setting for timeless family portraits.
For extended family sessions, space matters. We need room to:
Photograph the entire group together
Break into individual family units
Capture grandparents with grandkids
Get candid cousin moments
Myrtle Beach State Park gives us that flexibility — especially during sunrise or sunset when the light softens and everything glows.
The Beauty of a Sunrise or Sunset Session
Sunrise or Sunset is hands-down the most requested time for family beach photos — and for good reason. As a Myrtle Beach photographer, I always recommend sunrise or sunset for extended family sessions because:
The lighting is soft and flattering
The beach is less crowded
The temperature is cooler
The sky often gives us dreamy pastel colors
Sunset sessions also tend to feel more relaxed. The kids can play a little, the adults can breathe a little, and we capture both posed portraits and natural interactions.
What to Expect During an Extended Family Beach Session
Large family sessions don’t have to feel overwhelming. I guide the entire process so it stays organized but never stiff. We start with the full group portrait while everyone is fresh, then move into smaller combinations:
Grandparents with all grandchildren
Individual families
Sibling groups
Cousins together
Just the grandparents
And of course, we end with those fun, candid walking shots along the shoreline at sunset.

There is something truly magical about a Garden City Beach sunrise, and this session was the perfect reminder of why early mornings at the beach are always worth it. As a Myrtle Beach family photographer, I loved meeting this amazing family just as the sun began to rise over the ocean, filling the sky with soft light and golden tones.
This session was a special surprise for grandma—such a meaningful gift and a beautiful way to bring everyone together. It was an extended family session filled with laughter, connection, and so many genuine moments. Watching this family interact so naturally made my job easy, and it was clear how much love they all share.
With a crew of energetic boys, the laughter was nonstop. From playful smiles to sandy feet, the morning was filled with joy.
